- Ask someone who works for NARAL these questions:
I dont know anyone who works for NARAL but I contribute to planned parenthood. Close enough?
Should abortion be legally restricted for minors? Too broad a question to give a straight answer.
Should it? Probably yes. Is that at all practical in a ll cases in the real world? Probably no.
Should parents be legally required to be notified in the case of a minor? Same answer
Should abortions be funded by the government when necessary? When is it necessary to be funded by the govt?
Is there any stage of a pregancy where abortions should not be legal?
Yes, although where you take the cut-off is kind of arbitrary, though most vilised countries stop anywhere between 18 and 24 weeks. 24 weeks is probably too high for me.
AND the life of the mother takes precedence over the life of the unborn.
Ask someone who is active in gun-control issues these questions:
Sorry that will have to be me again.....
Should a prime goal be making handguns illegal? No. A prime goal should be reducing the number of guns on the street. Specifically how you accomplish this I have no friggin idea, but that should be the primary goal.
Should all firearms be registered with the Federal Government?
Dunno, but I have no problem with it if it comes to that.
And if you catch him with a few drinks in him:
Sorry, still sober.
Should all privately-owned guns be made illegal? No. And I doubt you'll find more than 2 in a hundred lefties like me who think they should.
- Ask someone who volunteers with Greenpeace:
Ooops, me again. I did work for Clean Water Action for a small while and at various stages joined and lapsed with Greenpeace, Sierra Club and Clean Air Watch (Council? I forget). I also have a Masters in Environmental Geology.
Where in America would you actually support someone building a factory, a power plant, or a department store; digging a mine, building a dam, running new power lines, making a new road, drilling for oil or natural gas, putting up a housing development, enlarging an airport, or cutting down trees for lumber in a forest?
Anywhere where it is necessary and comes out with a positive or neutral EIA.
Regardless of how clean it was? Cleaner the better. (while we're at it lobby the govt to allow industry to use best technology avaialble rather than mandating what to use)
When I was young, being an environmentalist was about cleaning up industry, not eliminating it. Things have changed.
Still is, still is. Unless you define - as you certainly do - environmentalists by the lunatic fringe.
Ask an advocate of affirmative action:
May have to recuse myself on this one....
Is affirmative action based on skin color? If not, then what? Last time I checked yes. And I'd prefer if it we on economic grounds myself.
If you have an affirmative action program, how do you tell when it has worked?
Oh I don't know. Wait! Maybe they could compare numbers to before the program started. What a novel concept!
How do you tell when you have not done enough yet? By counting the number of minorities admitted? By calculating percentages from each group concerned? Steadily improving numbers would show that it's working. Flat numbers would show you've reached full potential under the program. How hard is this to understand?
In what way is this not using quotas? See above.
As for opposing religion in government, the Left opposes religious people in government. Is this now the same thing?
It does? Recall Joe Leiberman now! How did we ever vote in Carter? Or even Clinton (who, it is said, could quote scripture as readily as policy)? Which party has had two Reverends running for Prez (albeit no-hopers)?
Have we twisted "establishment of a religion" to mean that no one in or near government shall be an observant Christian or Jew lest he contaminate us all?
Damn right "establishment of a religion" got perverted. I find most of the cases I hear about sad, comical or plain ludicrous. OTOH, if anything was really unconstitutional it would be the faith-based initiatives. That - as I have made myself clear in the past - is just hypocrisy.
