I realise the right is leery of another welfare program but as I said it is hard for people to abuse and be wasteful with it. When you aren't sick hardly anyone wants to go to the doctor, there aren't many welfare cheats in it.
Some doctors tend to overbill by ordering too many tests but they also do this with private health insurance. As long as the system just acts the same way as private insurance, paying the poorer people's bills from general revenue there is no other difference to private insurance.
Unemployment insurance is also offered by private insurance companies. Of course pensions are also offered by private companies. Most of the welfare state copies known private insurance so the principle of welfare cannot be wrong in itself. The complaint is whether the private sector can do it better and in the case of the poor there is little incentive to do so because of low profit margins and lack of money from the poor.
