Excellent and quite reasonable answers to almost all those questions. If all Democrats thought the way you did, I'd sleep a lot better on election nights.
Unfortunately, I'll still say you are the exception, rather than the rule. If you are a "leftie," I'm going to have to redefine the entire spectrum. And I'm sorry to say, the special interest groups I have been discussing are not the "fringe," but do have a lot of influence at the national level. And I'm not even talking the real extremists, like A.N.S.W.E.R.
As to the "affirmative action" argument: you can watch for improving numbers, but how do you tell that the numbers were "too low" in the first place? ;)
As for opposing religion in government, the Left opposes religious people in government. Is this now the same thing?
It does? Recall Joe Leiberman now! How did we ever vote in Carter? Or even Clinton (who, it is said, could quote scripture as readily as policy)? Which party has had two Reverends running for Prez (albeit no-hopers)?
Heck, remember JFK? His being Catholic was actually a big deal at one time. Carter was indeed an observant Christian. I wonder why religious Democrats are okay, but a religious Republican is Torquemada unless proven otherwise?
