That being said, I don't accept the running premise here that driving a car that meets all current laws and regulations and illegally polluting a river or throwing beer cans out a window are equivalents.
We disagree then. I don't see any difference (responsibility-wise, morality-wise) between dumping on the ground and dumping into the sky. I do see a practical difference: dumping into a fluid in motion means that the pollution will be spread around - shared among a wider number of people. And it dillutes itself by mixing with cleaner fluid, elsewhere. That makes it easier to deny responsibility. "See, it goes away." Until the pollution is intense enough that it stays in noticable concentrations (cf: Hudson River, Denver, Mexico City, etc.)
Nor do I think it is as important as other problems currently facing us. This a beauty contest to determine the worst problem ever? I guess the winner of that contest must be people-complaining-about-SUVs? Is there a people-against-people-complaining-about-SUVs organization that I can mail a check to?
You guys are dancing all over the place. Is this about using more gas than necessary? Is it about pollution?
Well, based on your post that I responded to, I thought the topic was about the left continuing to point a gun at your head.
When discussing SUVs, these are two different issues. They are both on my list of things to dislike about SUVs, though. Also on my list: what they do to the visibility of those driving normal cars, wretched safety records (SDAI-Tech-statistics notwithstanding), and general trendiness (die yuppie skum!!!!)
Older small cars pollute a lot more than a modern SUV. Obviously a problem that solves itself, if it has not done so already.

Starting to sound like a rational discussion - did I do something wrong?
