Tell that to the people who own or go to opera houses and giant theaters for plays who have massive heating, cooling and electric bills all which consume valuable resources.
Cooling is electric, too. Heating can be from a combination of sources: oil, natural gas, or electricity. Having spent some years in the industry (and some time as a theater tech geek, too), I can vouch for the improvements manufacturers, architects and engineers continually make to reduce consumption and increase efficiency in heating/cooling, lighting, and a building's use thereof. The same is not easily said of the automotive industry - not in this country, anyway.
I just don't see how anybody can complain about the fancy car owner wasting resources when the rest of society waste a lot more resources in other ways.
Electricity is often generated by something other than the consumption of non-renewable resources - and will be, even more so, in the future. Internal-combustion engines, on the other hand, rely solely on petroleum distillates - once used, never to be regained.
I wonder sometimes why the Pentagon isn't visibly "driving" alternative fuel research (if they are, I'd love to hear about it!). I'll betcha an M-1 Abrams sucks down a lot more fuel per mile than any civilian vehicle. We don't complain about it because we believe our gas-, diesel- and J4-guzzling military to be necessary . . . and guess who's going to have priority when crude oil finally is proven to be running out?
