And as always, the question finally boils down to who gets to decide what's "necessary" for me? By whose standards?
Not surprisingly, those who bitch about these things always seem to envision themselves, or someone like themselves, in this role.
The SUVs meet the pollution standards set for them. Better than some other cars on the road, especially the old clunkers favored by those who dislike supporting Corporate Greed by buying new cars. They're not hated because they use too much gas, or pollute too much, but because they represent something that infuriates the Left at a visceral level. Kind of like Bush, I suppose.
Then our masters can get on to decide who really needs a house that big, who really needs more than two kids, who really needs to waste all that farmland raising evil meat, or who needs to burn polluting wood in their heaters or fireplaces.
