I'm happy to know you know so much about living with, and transporting, children.

I have four.

You have zero, I believe.

That would make me the expert.

Hear it from the voice of experience: A large family seldom needs more than one "whole-family" vehicle. The parent who has the kids uses the big car, and the parent who doesn't, or only has to run errands with two or three of them, uses the small car. That's how it is. This is even true of my former neighbors, who have six children: one 10-seat van, one small car (seats four). Unless one of the parents also has to do considerable off-road driving, or is in a business like carpentry that requires a lot of cargo space, two big vehicles can't be considered a necessity.

Also, the gas money is better spent on shoes. And at least one of those kids will need braces. If you were a parent, you would know about these things.

If you want to say it's our God-given right as Americans to use up as much as we can so the rest of the world can't have it, by all means say so.

I'm sorry about your neighbor. We have had one or two fatal car accidents involving local teens and trees or telephone poles per year here. It always causes the same amount of grief at the lost life. It always involves a teenager driving at an excessive speed, who loses control of the car. Sometimes, though not often, it involves alcohol or, even less often, other drugs. Making bigger cars might be the answer to surviving the accidents, but basic good driving skills and safety practices would have prevented most of those accidents altogether.

The next time I see a clown in an SUV bearing down on me at an excessive speed, I will just recite my mantra:

SDAI says you aren't there
SDAI says you aren't there
SDAI says you aren't there

I'm sure that will make him go away.
