A major shot across the bow of the Left, and with more ramifications than might first appear.
Do I believe in gay marriage under the law? No. Do I have a problem with gays forming civil legal unions, or having private ceremonies in willing churches? No. Do I think it is an issue for the Constitution? No.
That being said, a few points that the Left should consider before they scream and leap:
- Odds of this making it through either branch of Congress are nil. Never mind getting it ratified by the states. This idea, like the flag-burning amendments (or the ERA), is pretty much DOA. But the President has made his moral stand and drawn his line in the sand for the benefit of his conservative base.
- Both Edwards and Kerry are on record as opposing gay marriage, although they may turn around and claim they were always for it. Could happen.
- Only one major candidate is on record as for gay marriage. Ralph Nader.
Knock yourself out, Democrats.
Some people have wondered if the timing of this announcement is due to the flap in California, the most obvious reason. Others, however, are wondering if it is timed to Nader announcing. Neither? Both?
I guess it depends. Is today a "Bush is a brilliant political genius" day, or a "Bush is a clueless idiot" day?
