Mr. Bush has probably made his biggest blunder ever. Few Americans, except those on the very far right, support amending the Constitution to ban same sex marriages. All Mr. Bush has done is inflamed a particularly active and capable constituency to organize the effort to toss him from office. Gays and lesbians come in all political stripes - right and left. Many are themselves uninterested in securing rights to marry. But offering a Constitutional amendment that effectively targets these people will generate a reaction that will effectively doom Mr. Bush's reelection bid.
It is a terrific miscalculation and a tremendous boon for the Democrats whose views more closely follow the mainstream on this issue.
Its interesting that the far right that routinely speaks to the primacy of individual freedom and states' rights want to amend our Constitution to abridge both.
I am looking forward to observing other similar Bush miscalculations as the election campaign develops. The man is genuinely dumb, backwards and without a clue.
