Should gays be allowed to marry? Yes, of course they should. In a nation and among a people dedicated to the cause of human liberty above all else, there is no rational, unprejudiced argument for why two devoted adults can't have the right to enter into the bond of marriage and enjoy all the legal, social, financial and many other benefits. But instead we have the ironic spectacle of far right conservatives fighting heroically to deny gay Americans from officially practicing what is, undeniably, conservative family values. Would they really prefer to see flaming gays wildly fornicating with 10 different partners a week rather than committing to stable, monogamous, matrimonial union?!? (and a real union, called marriage, not these 2nd class 'civil unions')
But have no illusions. America will pay a terrible price for leading the civilized world in this necessary expansion of liberty. Just as the freedoms and equality we strive to extend to women have enraged Islamic fundamentalists, so too will our efforts to grant equal rights for gays and lesbians. Even more so, in my view. Al Queda will recruit young terrorists by the thousands by merely pointing out, "Look at how sick and twisted the American infidels are, now they even let men marry men! We must fight and destroy them!" Exactly the kind of cultural chasm driving further apart civilizations, unfortunately.
