I suppose people living together in other states without the legal support of marriage/union might be entitled to all the rights of marriage, provided they had the legal paperwork in place, such as the ever-dnagerous openended powers of attorney, asset accountings, insurance polocies, living will addendums and what not.

With legal guidance, expensive at best,
