California HAS a protection-of-marriage law. Proposition 22, which passed in California by 61.4 to 38.6 percent.

The Mayor of SF and his pet judges told the law to fuck off. This is why everything hit the fan in the first place. Civil disobedience by the authorities themselves is nothing to sneeze at.
