First, I'm convinced, without clear evidence yet, that homosexuality is largely if not completely genetic.
There's no evidence of this one way or the other as far as I know, but I have never studied the issue in depth.
If homosexuality is, in fact, genetic, then a very interesting thought occurs to me.
Assuming homosexuals have been around for most of human history, and to the best of my knowledge this is so, then we have a gene running down through hundreds, if not thousands of human generations that by all reason, should not have survived even one generation. Can anyone think of a trait with less likelihood of being passed on to offspring than being gay?
Yet, there the gene is. The almost inescapable conclusion is that homosexuality, if it is genetic, is intimately genetically linked to something else that is a powerful survival trait, one that overrides a trait that is only one step below sterility for being an evolutionary non-starter. What? I have no idea. Is the stereotypical intellectual creativity of gays more than a stereotype? Is it something else?
If genetic engineering becomes possible, I would definitely think twice, or even three times, before trying to weed that gene out of humanity.
