Re Christians, snakes, etc.
A number of years ago a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to climb a mountain with her church group. I knew this lady was really, really Christian, but not obtrusively so, and the church sounded kinda mainstream, Baptist or something. She and I had climbed together before, just ourselves, and had a great, platonic friendship.
I said sure, sounded good to me, new people and all that, and I think they wanted some help. Wasn't much of a mountain, but it takes a couple of days.
About a week later she told me they would have religious services on the climb on Saturday night and Sunday morning, and asked if I'd be OK with that.
Of course, I said, as open-minded as a recovering Roman Catholic can be. I'd enjoy that, as long as they didn't wave snakes around or speak in tongues. Hah, hah! To me those were as remote as painting my face and drinking cows blood.
That was the last I heard of that climb. I found out later that her particular group DID speak in tongues. I had thought that was confined to places in Louisiana only accessible by boat. I had absolutely no idea it's a common phenomena. Have read a bit about it since.
Anyway, that's what I know about fundalmentalist religious services. Squat.
