Seems your experince is with the fourth tier of engineers below CHE's, AEs, and EE's. That may explain some things, but MEs are still pretty bright compared to your average college grads. I would have thought they'd be highly cost conscious as well, but maybe not. My own perceptions of cost consciousness may be colored by the hard times in the chemical industry.
