If Apollo 13 failed and the astronauts became stuck in a high orbit, even a solar orbit synchronize with Earth odds are a mission would have been mounted with Apollo hardware to recover the bodies and learn from that failure. Same if any Apollo mission failed on the Moon.

This is not likely with Mars because of the order of magnitude needed for going there.
