Nobody in their right mind would advocate using an Apollo style mission architecture for Mars.
I recently listened to a talk about a plasma beam propulsion system which could send people to Mars and back in 96 days with about 11 days on the surface of Mars.
Another much less near term method would half that (but it uses huge amounts of antimatter).
