11 Days?
If we're only going to Mars to take some pictures/samples, plant the flag and dance around for MTV, then going to the Moon first doesn't make that much sense, but...
Mark said that we don't need to test equipement on the Moon because all the environmental conditions can be simulated on Earth and in LEO.
One problem is, mistakes happen. Most recently, it was found that the x-ray spectrometers were installed on the wrong rovers, a mixup. The Mars Climate Orbiter was lost due to a lack of oversite and having two systems of measurement. And who can forget the dissapointing first pictures from Hubble. At least Hubble was close enough to allow the problem to be corrected.
If the goal is an extended stay on Mars, I think it would be cheaper and safer making mistakes on the Moon and we would have a better chance of correcting those mistakes given the proximity. Problems could be solved and the mission continued.
