They had to save themselves except through verbal input from Earth (also available at Mars). 3 days was not sufficient to mount a rescue mission. Duh. All fatal incidents and this near fatal one as well as those on Mir indicate the same thing. Death in space is swift and fatal unless those onboard can respond. 3 days distance is virtually MEANINGLESS.
