Generalizations about "the Left"

You are mistaken if you think that people on the Left know little about science because they are on the Left. It's a common assumption that people who deal in "hard sciences" and in technology are on the right politically. You may be surprised to find that it ain't necessarily so. Political discussions aren't part of the work in those fields, unless one is seeking government funding, so the topic may not be broached as often.

Also, the idea that there should be a moral agreement on issues like freedom sounds very different to me than it does to you. Freedom means thinking without restriction, and saying what you think. "Moral agreement" in this case sounds very much like dogma to me, which means freedom to think, but not too much, and definitely not outside the lines. Political correctness, indeed.

The difference is philosophical. To call those of us whose philosophies differ from yours vacuous reveals a similar approach as those who call people whose religion differs from theirs infidels. The label is very important because it means you don't have to listen.

Re: Islam: As the youngest of the three Religions of the Book, having been founded in the 7th Century CE, Islam is moving through its evolutionary phases in similar ways as Judaism and Christianity both did. Each of the older faiths was a very polarized and warlike religion in its time, particularly when the religion was strongly identified with a political entity or entities. Each got past that as the dichotomies between the socially beneficial (and more uplifting) teachings of their founders and the warlike ways of their leaders became more clear to later teachers and faithful. Unfortunately, Islam is going through this developmental phase at a time very dangerous to the peace and health of the whole planet.

Does this mean we lead by example, or does this mean we beat them with a stick? The latter is likely to get us the sullen quiet of the slave quarters, but will it give us peace in the long run?

This is probably my last post of the day because I still have 3 scenes to complete for a project that starts tomorrow -- been using this place to give my brain a break from writing dialogue -- but if you care to answer, I'd be willing to continue the conversation later.
