It might be more pragmatic than liberal. Either way I couldn't find much fault with someone that believed that way.

I often muse on how Saddam might now be consolidating his pan Arabic empire and planning the take over of Iran.

Meanwhile, he is a locked tight USA client state providing us with oil so cheap, gas is selling for under a dollar a gallon.
