Slam the borders shut? How? Ring the continent with barbed wire? Build a wall? Remind you of anybody?
On the other hand, if you would like to see more evidence that we are at war, rather than just engaging in police actions, I can think of a couple things.
Universal rationing of petroleum products comes to mind immediately. We could then make a boycott of Middle East oil a reality.
So does a military draft. How else will we find the soldiers to patrol the walls and shoot at our gardeners as they come and go?
And maybe more serious enforcement of laws that punish the employers of illegal immigrants, complete with massive seizure of assets. Since they are, after all, in it for the money, they should be made paupers for their transgressions, don't you think? Right now, the people who take the brunt of the punishment are those who come here looking for work, not the people who offer them the low-wage jobs that attract them.
But nothing like this will happen because it would make the public uncomfortable.
