Many in the south are re-thinking their unholy alliance with the rabid Republican party. And it isn't a pretty thing to watch.
The South moved as a block into the Republican party on the backs of the Klu Klux Klan as a result of the passing of the Civil Rights Act in July of 1964. The act was introduced under the administration of President Kennedy who was assassinated before its enactment.
Lyndon Johnson signed the bill into law and predicted "I am afraid we have lost the South for a hundred years." The racist Dixiecrats became Republicans and as a result no Democrat has won a presidential election unless he was a white male from the South-brother Jummy Carter and Bill Clinton. Dixiecrats become "Reagan Democrats" finding a sanctuary in the Republican party that sponsored the resistance of measures that Richard Russell of Georgia feared would....bring about intermi gling and amalgamation of the races in our states. Here Pat Robertson, former Republican presidential candidate, finds a comfortable home.
Until my fellow southerners re-think the alliance formed. And now, the black population is no longer seen a the formidible threat it once was. This threat has been replaced with the hispanic population. All of this leaves the poor southener dizzy wondering what spot is left for him and which party offers refuge. Perhaps Ross Pea-rot will run again?
