re: Divide and conquer

Not bad, liked the line about Swaggert's girls.

I'd just point out that it is Democrats taking the lead these days on illegal immigration. Bush's tight relationship with Antonio Blair....er, I mean, Vicente Fox...is probably a conflict of interest for the Bush Administration.

I have to take strong exception to your claim that illegal immigration is the cause of job loss in America. Couldn't be: The lost jobs are higher up the economic food chain than the jobs typically taken by illegal immigrants. Unless you're worried that laid-off American professionals are having to compete with illegals in the fast food industry? Rather than securing minimum wage employment for formerly middle-class Americans, wouldn't it be more constructive to stop the loss of high-paying jobs and preserve the American middle class?

It's not the illegal workers coming in to the country that's the problem, it's the jobs leaving the country that's hurting us so badly. So much for trusting to the loyalty of American business. The term "human resources" should have been a warning: We've been stripmined and clearcut, and now that what's left is only the high-cost "ore", business is moving on to more lucrative pastures.

We'd all like to eliminate the IRS, but there's a fundamental difference in tax policy between Republicans and Democrats. The true Democratic position (not the silly Republican caricature of "tax and spend") is that taxes are the necessary means to pay for necessary government services; you can't get something for nothing. Republicans too, as exemplified by Dubya, obviously love to "tax and spend"; we just differ on which government services we consider necessary.
