When dealing with various cultures it's not good to deal in absolutes. Somewhere along the way political correctness decided that discrimination is bad just because some folks were discriminated against becasue of race or color.
Let's make it real clear. Discrimination is a very good thing. The equality game is misleading. While everyone should have equal opportunity and be treated equally by the law that does not mean that universal equality is some sort of sacred goal.
Lumping all cultures and their traditions together as equals is ridiculous. Discrimination must be used to discern positive attributes from negative ones.
During the civil rights movement some folks didn't understand what was being fought for. They interpret equality in what becomes a destructive manner.
Rap and Beethoven are not equals. However as creative expression they should be afforded equal protection under the law. The same is true with Islam and Western cultures. However, with Islam we have some serious human rights issues that require attention. Abuse of women, children and justified murder are embraced by Islam and fly in the face of western and other commonly held human rights.
The Declaration of Independence and a dissertation by Osama bin Laden are both political statements, but treating them as equals can only be done by someone who is in a mentally atrophied state.
Those who seek by power of numbers to impose their beliefs or language upon anyone are not be lauded and discrimination is still a very valuable tool in furthering one's development. If a culture has something valuable to offer it will be sought by others and embraced.
A life in the gutter, a life of violence, a life of greed and materialism or a life in a more progressive manner is solely based upon the repeated usage of proper discrimination from birth to death. Discriminating against cultures, beliefs, individuals or things that are personally or collectively destructive to your and others well-being is the intelligent course of action.
Multiculturism, like equality, has been turned into some sort of doctrine whereby some folks can justify the forced acceptance of things folks find ignorant or objectionable.
