You travel with people who define the word differently.

"Multicultural" in my world will get you 200 different cultural variations on the fairy tale we know through the Perrault version, "Cinderella". It will get you pictures with faces that aren't all white. It will get you bilingual books and CDs on a label called Putamayo World Music, with some of it in English.

We already speak different languages here. We already dress differently here. We already think differently here. The merge toward a common whole is gradual, but never complete. You and I are the same race, but as I'm a Yankee girl and you're a South'ren boy, we are already divided by a common language, and our cultures are very different.

What we have in common in America is the law. I sincerely believe that one must learn enough English to understand the law in its original language to be a citizen here, but I know people who still attend the Polish Mass, and whose language of choice at family gatherings is Italian. Even in public. That's multicultural. I consider it a form of wealth.

I already went to Catholic school. I know how the whole dress-alike thing works: badly. Who sets the standard for similar dress: WalMart or Brooks Brothers?

If multicultural society is bastardized, then accept your illegitimate life. We are already there.
