I'm with Mary Anne on this one. Although I feel that only one national language (English) is a good idea and that public funds should not be used to allow non-English speakers to avoid learning it; the question of culture and language should be like religion: no interference and no support from the society as a whole. My family has been here for almost a century and both I and my father served in this country's armed forces in time of war. I will not tolerate some jerk in a supermarket line telling me I should speak English in public because I'm flirting in Spanish with the Latina behind the register. What are we supposed to do, dress in "traditional" American clothes like cowboy gear?
Well, I got news for you, cowboy clothes were invented by the Mexicans. The gringos stole them when they occupied the northern half of Mexico.
