In hindsight, you are correct.

However, at the time of the 1st Gulf War, we thought we could have our cake and eat it too: We believed that we had so weakened Sadam, that he would soon be toppled by his own people (which would have made said toppling seem much more legitimate to the Iraqi people, the UN, and to the rest of the World Community).

What we didn't count on was that the UN would actively seek to prop-up a blood-thirsty tyrrannt like Sadam. They did sometimes overtly (with the acceptance of Sadam's terms on ending WMD inspections), and sometimes covertly (with the oil for food scandel), and so in the end, we failed misserably at achieving our true objectives in the 1st Gulf War.

So now we took the 2nd, and more difficult approach in the 2nd Gulf war...And we are finding that the price is high (which was expected). But we will succeed eventually: Even though the Terrorists, the few remaining Sadam supporters, the Left-wing of the DNC, and the UN have all joined together in an un-holy alliance to make the USA fail.

We will succeed.

Then we'll take on Iran, if it doesn't take on us first.
