The problem with folks all over the world is they see in such limited time frames. The MTV generation had a short attention span, but the tivo generation has an even shorter one. If things aren't solved yesterday - it's too late.
I grew up watching President after President do precisely diddly squat in the Middle East. They treated it much as they treated Social Security - a hands off, let it self-destruct philosophy. Sure Kissinger held peace talks, Carter held peace talks, Clinton held peace talks - there were lots of peace talks, but no one ever dealt with Muslim terrorism.
1958 Iraq chaos, bodies hanging from lamp posts, Brits bail out.
1972 Munich Olympics - puts terror on the center stage
1979 Embassy stormed 50 hostages in Iran.
1981 Sadat is murdered by Muslim terrorists because he signs a peace treaty.
etcetera etcetera...
We've just bought the oil, sent some military equipment to Israel and have used them as a buffer. "They'll take out Israel first before they ever get to the US" seemed like the decade after decade approach to the Islamofascists.
Ayatollah Khomeni was on the cover of Time for years thumbing his nose at the west - and no one did diddly. Everyone just wanted to buy the oil and hope for the best. Unfortunately the best never happened.
Where did it get us? Iranian leaders would vacation in France and order the parts for their nuclear reactor while proudly telling the world they were going to exterminate the scourge of Israel.
Saddam was just another thug, a two bit tyrant who was useful in keeping Iran occupied, but then he decided it was easier to simply take kuwaits oil fields and the 'ancestral lands' and perch on the Saudi border.
Our Saudi friends love and hate us. They hate us because we support Israel and the love us while for five decades we've protected their fragile, greedy, rolling in excess regime from a coup.
Saddam had developed chemical weapons and was working on them even after the gulf war. If we didn't invade in 2003, by now he would likely have some form of WMD.
Our hands off to the region let Pakistan and India get the bomb.
We needed a base to be able to confront Islamofascism. This was never better pointed out than when Carter's decayed, despised army tried a rescue mission and ended up as death in the desert. We had no base.
We now have a base. It is the most important US military base in the world because it allows us to strike at folks in a 101 ways we could not strike before without using imprecise cruise missiles or using long range craft, in-flight refueling, etcetera.
Even if we had 10,000 casualties in Iraq - that base would be worth that price because that base is our new insurance policy against big Islamofascist terror. It allows us to support the decrepit house of Saud without bunkers near their palaces. It allows us to protect the Kurds and do reconaissance over areas we only saw in satellites before.
We can drop a nuke on Teheran in 5 minutes and 27 seconds - and they now know this.
There is SO MUCH going on now that could never be done before that the average American has no idea how valuable our continued presence in Iraq is.
Islamofascism is on the run. They are panicked.
Bush is the first President not to play it safe with Islamofascism. He's called it out and it has responded. The status quo is over. Islamofascism is making its last stand.
Bush will not pull out. He understands this value that is never addressed in the media or by the punditry.
The move into Iraq is a victory for the west. The media doesn't like that. The Islamofascists certainly don't like it - they were quite happy blowing up Americans in Embassies, hijacking ships and blowing up barracks when US Presidents would invite one of their comrades to Camp David and bend down on one knee and plead for them to act civilized and pretend they were.
Again, to sum up: the Tivo and MTV generations will not be satisfied if it doesn't end like a film or a sitcom in 30 minutes. Years and decades are simply too big amounts of time for them to comprehend. The media conveniently ignored the genocidal killing in these regions for decades only reporting on it if it involved a European foreigner or an American. Now they report every casualty with glee - only because they are completely moronic and have a hard time grasping the finer plot twists of a comic book, much less a watershed moment in dealing with an intransigent middle east.
Bush is the right man for the job, because he doesn't care what folks think about him. And this is why the media and the left pile on - because they sense it makes no difference. He's immune to the riff-raff and forges ahead. Reagan couldn't do this, neither could his dad who was way too keyed in on poll numbers like Clinton.
And that's precisely why we now have a base and the leverage - because Bush took the risk.
Folks don't realize we've already won.
Well, Chavez figured it out and on December 3rd he'll get his reward.

- The next President will not have to deal with the war in Iraq.
- And a further point to consider is...
- re: And in november?
- " The American people would never have supported an invasion of a foreign nation which posed no direct threat, simply for economic or geopolitical reasons. "
- your drinking cool-aid if you think it was for those reasons.
