What you're missing
In terms of aggression and violence toward the West, the difference makes no difference.
The Taliban are Sunni. So is al Qaeda. So was Saddam. The Iranian loonies are Shiite. The secular Baathist regime in Syria supports Hezbollah. Hamas and other Sunni terrorists train in Shiite Iran, and Iran has long supported Hamas. Connections between Saddam and terror groups are documented.
In the end, all of them want to rule an empire, and destroy the West, and have, and will, work together enthusiastically when they want to. Whether their end result is the Caliphate, or something else, is not that important.
