Tom, you're confusing Saddam using Islam with him supporting Islam. Any leader of an Arab country that didn't acknowledge the underlying religion of the land would be ousted in minutes no matter how brutal they are. However, Iraq was forced into conforming to the more modernistic style of that religion where women were not repressed as the more dangerous sects of Islam dictate. It's those divisions of the Muslim faith that have primarily waged war against the west.
Shiites, the same bunch heading the Axis of Evil land of Iran, are the majority of the population in Iraq Tom and they were clearly held down by Saddam's thuggery, right or wrong. When we removed Saddam, we empowered this much more radical and fundamental side of Islam. I'm not sure why you're arguing this. Maybe it's the term "secular" you object to. Obviously Saddam's Iraq was not a truly secular country but its allowed and supported religious culture was one that fit our way of life much more than the Shiites in power now.
