Belief

I can't be too harsh on the American people, or with President Bush, because I too believed at the time that the invasion was justified

I understand it's the case of many americans.
Being the sole representative of a so called "Axis of Weasel" country at HZ, I have been attacked by conservatives over and over again.
I remember Mark Eby being very mad at french speaking europeans and never missing an opportunity to remind me how appeasing is bad. At one point he said he'd revise his judgment about Bush if it turned out he lied. Instead, even when it became obvious Bush mislead his country, we remained the appeasers, the ones to be blamed, in his view.

It is very difficult for people to recognize how wrong they were (even when so many around the world sent signals pointing their total disagreement).
This is also an dangerous aspect of patriotism, waving the flag. "If the President said so, it must be right". After WW2 and the building of the EU, patriotism lost most of its appeal, over here.
