I can't be too harsh on the American people, or with President Bush, because I too believed at the time that the invasion was justified. My moment of agonizing reappraisal came after I learned about the truth on the ground re WMD/AL-Q, coupled with the criminal negligence of mismanaging the occupation. True, the Bush gang then started on a long list of other excuses to continue to justify their presence, but I would hesitate punishing him for doing something which he initiated with my approval and with those of my elected representatives.
On the other hand, if I ever find out he was lying about WMD/AL-Q, rather than just mistaken, I would support war crimes trials. I will grasp at that straw because to do otherwise would simply be too hard for me to bear.
