I read that and considered my childhood of repetitive sermons upon eternal damnation of the “Sinnahs-ah” every Sunday. If you have attended a Freewill or Holiness service you’ll know why I added “-ah” to the southern dialect version of Sinner.
Tom’s experiences would be far different if he’d attend most rural-suburban Churches in the middle of the country.
Pulpit pounding, shouting, storming into the congregation, laying on hands is not only part of the Sermon, it is expected from the Pastor. If he doesn't get loud and red-faced, he's viewed with some suspicion.
Yes, the pastors I listened to in my youth all Preached FIRE! and BRIMSTONE! sermons every Sunday. And then they sinned right along with most of the Congregation through the rest of the week.
Usually worse than the others.
