Lutherans don't practice Scientology.

Trying to provide basic services for people so that they will have a stab at equal opportunity actually does represent their interests. If some of the efforts fail, that's the price of experimenting. Some of them succeed.

Besides this, a lot of remarks about poor people using their votes to rob the rich have come from this quarter over the years. Incidentally, voter intimidation and misinformation campaigns about where to vote have not centered on affluent neighborhoods, and have not been conducted by Democrats. It looks to me as if there's a real fear that people without money may use their votes to try to balance things out, the same kind of thought process that feared labor unions. If people organize, it's harder to keep them down. If the ladder is really open to all comers, then someone will have to share their place near the top and their children will have to compete with a bunch of hungry newcomers. There goes the neighborhood.
