A striking example of oversimplifying complex reality is the way that your perception of the hideous complexity of the situation in Iraq collapses into an untenable choice and a false choice: Stay-the-course, or surrender. Attempting to impose simplicity on complexity has led you to a dead-end in which you're intellectually powerless to think of a way out of the situation.
By this I assume that you have seen, with your more complex thinking processes, another course of action other than continuing to attempt to save Iraq by whatever means we can manage, or simply quit and let Iraq burn?
Most of the "alternatives" I've seen from liberals are idiotic fantasies, like bringing in Muslim troops from neighboring nations, redeploying to Okinawa, or simply assuming that once the Americans leave, peace will descend like a dove.
You are aware that a retreat from Iraq would also make the war in Afghanistan impossible to win? Or do I have to explain that again, too?
