So the answer to my question is "No".

Thank you.

Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard in his third year. His father was an attorney and his mother was a schoolteacher and a University of Washington regent.

I bet he got a good education in the Seattle public schools and in private Lakeside School in North Seattle, and I also bet his parents wrote checks to pay for his college tuition.

You have to have either grades and test scores or connections to get into Harvard. Poor kids haven't got connections, and unless they are fortunate enough to go to good schools, they won't have the grades or the test scores.

Equal opportunity? The US doesn't have it. We only talk about it as if we did.

You're right: we could go on like this all day. You will never see it unless you start to deal with poor people on a daily basis, or at least a weekly basis, instead of dealing with your impressions of them. Do everyone a favor: become an adult literacy tutor. Your local literacy council will train you, they're dying for men, and you will get an eye-opening experience.
