Then they came for the pacifists, and I did not speak up, because I am not a pacifist.

Then they came for me, and by then there was no one left to speak up for me.

Civil liberties seldom disappear suddenly, wholesale. They are nibbled away, or cooked slowly, like the frog in the pot of cold water put on the fire. This frog knows the sound of a match being struck. Do you?
