Try to imagine an enslaved father asking for his child to be returned to slavery.

The boy had a living parent, who did not consent to his departure with his mother, and who wanted him back. The boy's mother was dead. Had she lived, the story would have been altogether different, because it would have been a custody case where both parties had equal legal standing. Likewise, if the boy's father had not fought for his return, he would have stayed here.

It was the law. Its outcome was unhappy, but it was the law. That was rather the point. There are thousands of children in this country who are returned to bad situations every year, without all the fanfare accompanying this case, where they are beaten or starved, but that's OK, because they aren't being returned to Communism. Those children are just as well-served by the child custody laws as Elian was. You don't like the law that places a child in a parent's custody? Change it.

For someone who has such interest in making sure that a girl's parents have veto power over her reproductive decisions, including forcing her to bear a child, I'd call your political redefinition of parents' rights just a little disingenuous.
