re: Only about your "Dear Mr. Scientist" reference

No, I enjoyed the responses and the varying tones of no concern at all to dire catastrophe.

Dr. Ali working at Argonne and not understanding the ozone breakdown and recombination was the oddball out, but it makes me wonder how many other scientists are unfamiliar with the ozone cycle.

I also really liked Jim Swenson's little bit:

We may even outlaw many useful substances which really do not eat much ozone.
Is that being too careful and stifling people, or is it just right?
For this you will have to keep reading your newspaper and voting.

Some permanent environmental disasters are possible.
Ozone is no longer one of them.
This ongoing problem is likely to be "socially managed" for the whole time
you are growing up.
I think we are going to be OK, and even pretty good some day.

sincerely,
Jim Swenson

"Socially managed" indeed!
