A danger to himself.

Not the same. It has to be "a danger to himself and others". Believe me, I know.

The crucial component is commitment to an institution, either voluntary or involuntary. It takes an awful lot of evidence and special hearings to commit someone involuntarily.

If either of the young women had pressed charges for stalking, that might have been another squeeze point, but they didn't.

The laws are the way they are to protect people from involuntary commitment for reasons of convenience, to acquire an eccentric's money or property, or to resolve a family conflict.
