Thanks for the detailed reply, which I have read and registered. I will not think of you as a "gun freak" but I will not change from my original polemic about the prevalence of guns in your country, regardless of the legal and cultural complications which you have explained. And of course you and Lee are correct in pointing out the other kinds of objects which can and are used in violent crime. On that point please see my reply to Leeabove in which I make the simple and obvious point that even granting the human factor in gun crime, the wide prevalence of guns deliberately designed to kill people is clearly related to the high gun crime rate. As I said to Lee: Duh. I am 'angry and disappointed' at those in your country (or anywhere else at other times) who refuse to see the glaring bleeding obvious. Even granted your points about the human factors. As for Howard's remarks: I couldn't resist and did check Google News about an hour after my reply. As I guessed he was referring to the Port Arthur Massacre in early 1996. I am not a fan of Howard but his subsequent gun laws and buybacks were a truly great thing which even his enemies here acknowledge. On the matter of his tactless public intervention: he is a cunning politician and this is election year. He may well be doing this to remind the Australian public of how lucky we are, thanks to him.
