Our guns are in a steel security locker bolted to two wall studs in the far corner of a remote closet. When not in the custody of an adult, that's where they stay. There's one key, and two people on Earth know where it is. The ammunition is in another room.
If you ask anyone in my family whether a gun is loaded, he or she will look in the chamber before answering "No", and will answer "Yes" if checking isn't possible. Nobody ever points a gun, even one known to be unloaded, at another person.
Elementary procedures all.
It's like the Restaurant Rule, "If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat at a restaurant." If you can't afford a gun safe or have no place to put it, you can't afford to own guns.
