Why the economy tanked

What conclusions would a reasonable person draw about the real value of homes from looking at this curve? Tulip bulbs, anyone? What's scary as hell is that so many in government and the financial industry didn't see this.

Bonus extra: This graph mapped onto a roller coaster ride.
