Tolkien

Tom Brosz's comment about Tolkien caused me to think some more about that book. It's interesting that early in the "Lord of the Rings", Tolkien portrayed almost all of the established leaders of Middle Earth as being induced into inaction by Sauron. For example:

Denethor was demoralized into inaction by a Sauron controlled palantir.

Saruman (who was originally sent to Middle Earth to contest Sauron's power) was seduced by Sauron through a different palantir.

Theoden was betrayed into inaction by the traitor Wormtongue who was in Saruman's service.

Elrond and Galadriel were so convinced of Sauron's eventual triumph that they were preparing to flee to Valinor and leave Middle Earth to its fate.

Tolkien stated repeatedly that there was no intended symbolism in the "Lord of the Rings". However I find it hard to believe that Tolkien was not influenced by the behavior of European states towards Hitler during the appeasement period prior to WW-II.
