It means that, obviously, anyone who changes his mind to support Kerry, even if it's for very personal reasons, is mentally unstable.

The obvious reference was to Sullivan's sexual orientation. So I took the obvious point of view that has been used against people of his sexual orientation.
It's a short step from calling your political opponents mentally unbalanced to calling them criminals. In fact, opponents of Bush have been called both right here.
