Just as there will always be economic cycles...

there will be political cycles. Democrats had solid control of the House of Representatives for 40 straight years, until the 1994 election. They had control of the Senate for all but 6 of those years (1981-87). During that time, they also had the presidency from 1961-1969, 1977-1981, and 1993-1995.

Many of us conservatives felt the nation was being damaged during many of those years. We dug in and got our side elected. Democrats can and should do the same thing. I don't think either party should control the government for too long because it leads to complacency and corruption.

I think Democrats, particularly the DNC, need to do some soul searching and see why so many Americans didn't vote for them. I've known quite a few former Democrats who echoed Ronald Reagan's old line, "I didn't leave the Democrats. They left me."

Whatever they're selling, a majority of people aren't buying. Perhaps it's time to find out why, starting with a collective look in the mirror. Angry rants about how most of America must be stupid, as some are writing (and I never implied you), won't cut it. Most people reject that kind of arrogance and anger, and it's unhealthy to live that way.

Enjoy your birthday, Mary Anne. Don't let politics get you down. Much as I hate to think about it right now, there will be another presidential election in 4 years without an incumbent. If the Democrats field a good candidate, they'll have a good shot at winning. During the 20th century, the longest either party held the presidency was 20 years (1933-1953, FDR & Truman). Since then, the longest period has been 12 years (1981-1993, Reagan & Bush 41). If most people don't like what the Republicans do, they'll vote them out, perhaps as soon as the 2006 mid-term elections. It has happened before (1994) and it can happen again.
