Don't put words into my mouth. Actors draw upon their knowledge of the characters they're portraying. How can someone like Alan Alda who knows nothing about Republicans effectively portray one? His underlying assumptions will always come through. As others have pointed out, Alda's character shows an underlying darkness because that's what Alda thinks lies at the heart of Republicans. In that sense, the way an actor portrays a role often can't be separated from the actor's beliefs.
If you're going to portray an inner city African-American, you don't cast a suburban white guy and paint him in black face. Why is it so hard for you to see that for the best performance, if you're going to portray a Republican, why not actually use a Republican actor? There are a few and would probably be more if they believed they could admit their political beliefs without damage to their careers.
