Define a "compromise" position on abortion acceptable to the Democratic Party leadership.
The one we have now.
Granted, it differs from state to state, and is on average more restrictive in the "redder" states than the "bluer" ones. It is, however, a compromise reached in each of the state houses, based on Roe v Wade.
Because you don't watch the program, you won't have learned that the character of the Democratic candidate ("Matt Santos" as portrayed by Jimmy Smits) is a Latino Roman Catholic and has been revealed as personally opposed to abortion. He is no more inclined to overturn Roe v Wade as Alda's character.
Can you say "stare decisis"?
Here's another proposal on the question: Reduce the incidence of abortion by reducing the need. A true compromise would combine the Republican theme of abstinence with the Democratic theme of contraceptive education of all methods.
To put it more simply: A woman, regardless of age or marital status, who doesn't get pregnant in the first place has no need for "abortion as contraception", as the demonizers like to phrase it. A few thousand years of history teaches us that "abstinence only" doesn't work for everyone, even if the punishment brandished is eternal damnation.

- ... is like Carroll O'Connor playing Archie Bunker
- Exactly - political blackface
- If that is all you got from his performance, then that is very sad...
- Sad
- The Archie Bunker character was a simple minded bigot...
