The Archie Bunker character was a simple minded bigot...
and he was portrayed as "every conservative." I remember liberals who loved to laugh at him because he fit their warped views of what conservatives believe. I was only 13 or so when the show first aired and even then, I found it stupid.
Imagine if Hollywood tried to have a white man in black face doing an old Stepin Fetchit routine about a black man, complete with stereotypes about fried chicken and watermelon. That would cause a justified uproar. However, time and again Hollywood uses the same approach to portray conservatives.
